The Safe Church Health Check has been developed to help each local church to respond to the recommendations of the recent Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and is in line with the Child Safe Principles recently endorsed by the Council of Australian Government. The NSW Government has announced that compliance with the Child Safe Standards will soon become mandatory for all organisations working with children and young people. We have undertaken extensive consultation with local church leaders, survivor advocacy groups, legal advisers and our insurers to develop resources and policies to assist local church leaders.
The Safe Church Health Check is a comprehensive objective review process which will help provide evidence that your local church has Safe Church policies and procedures which comply with the minimum standards required of a Child Safe Organisation. It is important to note that we have been advised by Baptist Insurance Services that their underwriter has stated that this Safe Church Health Check will be a mandatory requirement for their insurance constituents to have continuing public liability insurance cover for sexual abuse claims from insurance renewal in September 2020. Please refer to the December 2018 Baptist Insurance Services Newsletter for further information https://www.baptistinsurance.com.au/newsletters.
Copies of the Safe Church Health Check and associated resources will be sent to every church via post and email in late July.
We would appreciate your prayers for this important project as we seek to support church leaders in making all of our churches a safe place for children, youth and vulnerable adults.
If you have questions about the Safe Church Health Check please email our Safe Church Coordinator, Craig Thacker, or phone on 9868 9212.
